Pads (numnahs) should never be used to mitigate the effect of a badly fitting saddle. Horses appear to appreciate the extra comfort afforded by pads. Their use is almost universal today. They offer protection to horses with sore backs, or with a tendency to develop a saddle sore, and assist with weight distribution. Pads are also used for appearance and to lesson the chore of cleaning the underside of the saddle.

Avoid thick pads if the saddle fits well to begin with, as they tend to spread the riders thighs and legs further away from the horse. A pad should have at least a half inch border around the saddle and not rub the horse anywhere. It is important to push the pad up into the saddles channel. The contoured tops of all our pads follow the natural curve of the horses spine.
